Innovation hub for growth

Galway City’s renowned innovation hub, Platform94, is set to inaugurate its impressive €5.2 million expansion today, marking a significant milestone in its evolution. Formerly known as the Galway Technology Centre, Platform94 has undergone a substantial transformation, expanding its footprint to a total of 66,000 square feet.

The expansion introduces fifteen private office spaces, alongside cutting-edge facilities including a video conferencing boardroom and a state-of-the-art media production suite. This strategic investment underscores Platform94’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the region.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this month, Platform94 has been a pivotal force in Galway’s technology landscape since its inception in 1994. Founded to cater to the emerging cluster of tech companies outside the capital, the hub is owned by Galway Chamber and WestBIC and enjoys support from Enterprise Ireland.

Dave Hickey, Chairperson of the board of directors at Platform94, highlighted the hub’s remarkable growth and impact, stating, “The space available for scaling companies today is 11 times what it was when we first opened 30 years ago.” With over 60 companies physically based in Platform94 and an additional 60 ‘virtual’ members utilising the facility intermittently, the hub has become a thriving ecosystem for innovation and collaboration.

Platform94’s expansion is expected to generate €66.8 million of gross added value to the region this year, further solidifying Galway’s reputation as a hub for digital technology. Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Dara Calleary, lauded the extension, affirming its role in providing high-potential businesses with the necessary space and support to flourish.

Leo Clancy, Chief Executive of Enterprise Ireland, emphasised the importance of collaboration in driving regional growth and innovation. He noted that Platform94’s expansion, supported by Enterprise Ireland through the Regional Enterprise Development Fund, will facilitate increased collaboration and innovation among scaling enterprises within the region, paving the way for international expansion.

As Galway continues to position itself as a leading hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, Platform94 remains at the forefront, championing the growth and success of SMEs and driving economic development in the region.
