A groundbreaking report by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC), titled AI in Business: How Small Business Owners Are Learning, Using, and Navigating Challenges with AI Tools, reveals how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming small businesses across the United States. The research, authored by Miles Chandler, Howard Wial, and Dobbin O. Bookman, highlights the increasing integration of AI in business operations and the challenges that remain.
According to the report, nearly 90% of small businesses have already implemented AI, with more than 60% reporting increased productivity as a result. However, despite widespread adoption, many small business owners face significant hurdles, including knowledge gaps, implementation difficulties, and concerns over responsible AI use. These challenges underscore the need for tailored education and support to help businesses maximise the benefits of AI.
The ICIC’s research, which includes responses from over 3,700 small business owners and insights from five focus groups, provides data-driven recommendations aimed at addressing these barriers. The report emphasizes the importance of AI education and training programs that can bridge the gap between AI potential and practical application. Additionally, it offers guidance for policymakers and educators to foster a more inclusive approach to AI adoption, ensuring that small businesses, particularly those in under-resourced communities, can thrive in the digital age.
Steve Grossman, CEO of ICIC, noted the transformative power of AI, stating, “AI is not just a tool; it’s a transformative force that can help small businesses in under-resourced communities drive prosperity and create generational wealth.” The findings have informed the Intuit More with AI Tour, an initiative designed to equip small businesses with the knowledge and tools to fully leverage AI.
With AI poised to be a game-changer for small businesses, this report provides critical insights to help owners navigate the evolving technology and unlock its full potential.
