McCain Foods Acquires Majority Stake in Strong Roots

McCain Foods has announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Strong Roots, a Dublin-based plant-based frozen food company. This strategic move comes after McCain’s initial investment of $55 million in 2021, acquiring a minority stake in the innovative company.

Founded in 2015, Strong Roots has carved out a niche in the plant-based food sector, offering a diverse range of products including cauliflower hash browns, mixed root vegetable fries, bites, and burgers. With McCain’s increased investment, the companies are eager to expand Strong Roots’ presence into new regions and develop additional vegetable-focused offerings.

Jillian Moffatt, Regional President of McCain GB and Ireland, emphasised McCain’s commitment to sustainable and planet-friendly food options through this acquisition.

“This investment bolsters McCain’s commitment to planet-friendly food, enabling us to extend our portfolio of healthier options that are grown, processed, and shipped in a sustainable manner,” Moffatt stated. “With a vision and values aligned to McCain’s, we are excited to continue our journey to scale the Strong Roots brand globally.”

Alongside the acquisition, McCain and Strong Roots have formed a brand advisory council, which will include the founder of Strong Roots, members from both companies’ teams, and external advisers. This collaborative effort aims to guide the brand’s growth and innovation strategies moving forward.

Samuel Dennigan, Founder and CEO of Strong Roots, expressed optimism about the future prospects, highlighting the company’s growth trajectory since its initial partnership with McCain.

“We have witnessed tremendous growth since partnering with McCain, and this move will enable Strong Roots to maintain its focus on sustainability while propelling innovation to bring delicious, vegetable-forward products to more consumers around the world,” Dennigan affirmed.
