Meta’s Louisiana data centre project is bringing fresh trade to small businesses, as construction spending creates opportunities for restaurants, suppliers and accommodation providers in Richland Parish.

For some entrepreneurs, the impact is substantial. Tim Allen, owner of Holy Tacos in Rayville, told Business Insider that business linked directly to Meta accounted for roughly 40% of his monthly trade. Catering orders typically ranged from $4,000 to $7,000. Nearby, HeBrews Coffee & Eats reported handling around 130 orders a day, compared with 30 on what it previously considered a good day.

The spending reflects the scale of Meta’s investment. In July, Louisiana Economic Development announced that the company had committed more than $50bn to the campus, which houses its Hyperion artificial intelligence training cluster. Plans cover nearly 10 million square feet and five gigawatts of IT capacity. Meta said it had contracted more than $1.6bn with Louisiana businesses, spreading demand beyond the immediate construction site.

Access to that work is also becoming more structured. The company has designated Source Louisiana as its main portal for subcontracting opportunities, allowing businesses to showcase their services, qualifications and capacity. Separately, Meta announced $5mn for Louisiana Delta Community College to fund training scholarships. Richland Parish high school graduates, starting with the class of 2026, are eligible for full scholarships for relevant trade certificates or courses.

Yet the employment figures underline why businesses cannot assume construction demand will last indefinitely. The project is expected to support 7,500 jobs at peak construction, against approximately 1,000 operational positions. State officials also forecast 1,900 indirect jobs, although those remain estimates.

For local firms, that difference makes repeat customers and a broader client base particularly valuable. The immediate opportunity is substantial; sustaining expanded premises, staffing and stock levels will depend on how much demand remains once the construction workforce moves on.
