A recent investigation by consumer group Which? has raised concerns over the accuracy of financial advice given by popular AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, and Google Gemini. The study revealed that these tools provided incorrect and sometimes risky financial guidance, highlighting issues in their reliability when applied to real-world financial decisions.

The investigation involved posing 40 typical financial questions to these AI tools. The results were alarming: ChatGPT and Copilot advised users to exceed the HMRC’s £20,000 annual ISA investment limit. In another instance, ChatGPT mistakenly claimed that travel insurance is required for most EU trips. Meta’s AI provided flawed advice regarding flight delay compensation, while Google’s Gemini suggested potentially illegal actions related to contractor payments. Which? described the number of errors as "far too many for comfort."

From a business perspective, these findings highlight a significant risk for financial services firms and regulators. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has pointed out that advice from such general-purpose AI tools is not regulated and thus falls outside the scope of the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. This creates a clear accountability gap, potentially leaving consumers vulnerable.

For businesses integrating AI into financial services, the implications are serious. Firms must ensure that the AI systems they deploy are not only accurate but also compliant with financial regulations. Failing to do so could result in reputational damage, regulatory scrutiny, and even legal liability.

In conclusion, while AI chatbots offer a scalable solution for financial advice, the risks highlighted by this study suggest that businesses must implement strict verification and governance frameworks to ensure compliance and protect consumers from misleading information.
